Colonies

Below is an alphabetic listing of the Mother, Daughter and Chutors. Mother colonies were the first colonies established. The daughter colonies were established by sons of the Mother colonies beginning some years later when land was tight in the original colonies. Chutors (Khutors in Russian) were small farms or estates.

The following information is listed for the each colony if it is available: basic information about the colony (type, founding year, Wolost, District, Province, other names, current name, map coordinates); a history of the colony; the progress of the colony (a timeline); population statistics; names of the mayors by year; names of the pastors by year; names of the schoolmasters by year and parish; agriculture highlights; and a full bibliography. Note that the information available for the daughter colonies and the chutors varies greatly.

Because some of the colonists arrived before their colonies were ready for habitation, nailing down an exact founding/settlement/established date is sometimes difficult in those early years. Therefore, a year range is given for the Mother colonies based on a number of sources. Some of the daughter colonies and chutors have no founding date, but they may have an earliest known date of habitation based on evidence from various sources.

As an introduction to the Colonies, you may want to begin by reading a brief history of the early years of Glückstal colonists up to 1810, before the colonies were ready for them to inhabit.

The Glückstal Lutheran parish was the first parish established. It initially served all four Mother colonies. Parishes were re-structured as the population grew, the number of colonies grew, and as a result of Reformed colonists desiring their own parish separate from the Lutheran parish. Read more about parish structure in the colonies.

Colonies in the Glückstal area were organized into districts similar to our counties in the United States for the purpose of local administration. These were called Wolosts. Read a brief overview of the Wolost structure.

Finally, a list of Glückstal Colonies related bibliographies, timelines and important documents in chronological order from circa 550 to 1977 in the "Research Source Guide: Glückstal Colonies."
